WWE joins sporting ranks in funding brain trauma research

There are those who might argue that World Wrestling Entertainment is not really a sports organization. Regardless of how you might assess the athletic integrity of the participants in that particular arena, we think it can be agreed that the nature of their activities can result in them suffering some pretty severe, traumatic brain injuries.

New York readers may be interested to learn that the WWE recently announced that it will put up a significant chunk of money to support medical research of brain injuries. Officials say the commitment will amount to the organization paying out $1.2 million over the next three years. The aim, they say, is to find and promote treatments for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, the destructive brain disease that has come to be associated with repeated concussions.

Probe of Metro-North train wreck could take 6 months

Limited service is once again being provided along the rail line between New York City and communities to the east following last week's stunning collision of two Metro-North trains. Regular full-time runs are expected to resume on Wednesday, according to Metro-North officials. Amtrak officials say regular service in the area of the derailment and collision is expected to be restored as of today, as well.

More than 70 people were injured when a New Haven-bound commuter train derailed Friday evening and collided with one coming from the opposite direction. Five individuals were reported to have been injured critically. They were among multitudes that were rushed to hospitals in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

New York medical malpractice: Misdiagnosis most common error

We have come to expect a lot from the medical profession. Doctors go through years of schooling to get the right to practice. The rigors of medical training are such that doctors in New York and elsewhere tend to be paid well and when we go to one, we trust they know what they're doing.

But errors do happen, often leading to malpractice claims. And when claims are paid, the most common cause recorded is for a failure in diagnosis. That's the conclusion drawn by authors of a study that appeared in the online version of BMJ Quality and Safety.

New York car accidents: Remedies for drowsy driving elusive

A lot has been said about distracted driving and the dangers it poses to everyone on the road. So many fatal car accidents occur in New York and the rest of the country because of momentary diversions of attention toward texting, cellphone calling, make-up application or just general rubbernecking.

Safety experts are doing all they can to try to counter such activity. The laws are getting tougher regarding the use of handheld devices while driving and driving drunk. But there’s one thing experts admit they can’t do much about: drowsy driving.

2 of 3 suits from one truck crash now settled

Back in 2010, a fatal truck crash left two volunteer firefighters dead. The accident occurred outside of New York but, but the circumstances are such that we feel it bears some attention because of complicated legal actions that have followed.

According to reports, the truck-SUV accident occurred July 26, 2010. The two firefighters were in the process of responding to a call to a house fire that day when their truck collided with an SUV at an intersection. The driver of the truck lost control. It rolled and the cab of the truck was sheared off. The two firefighters died after being thrown from the truck. The SUV driver suffered serious personal injuries.

New York brain injury: One blow is all it takes

If there are voices out there opposed to the notion of reducing sports-related traumatic head injuries, they aren’t particularly prevalent. That’s probably just as well. As any Nassau County attorney with experience in personal injury can attest, it doesn’t take much to inflict injury to the brain.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are responsible for more than 35 percent of all head injuries. Motor vehicle wrecks are cited as causing just over 17 percent of traumatic damage to the brain. And that’s nearly matched by head injuries caused when a person collides with either a stationary or moving object, like another human being on a playing field. The CDC says such so-called “struck by/against” events are the second leading cause of TBI in children.

Truck-Car crash on BQE injures 4, somehow only slightly

Investigators are said to still be in the process of trying to determine what caused a small, but very disruptive truck-car crash on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Monday. Miraculously, the accident left four people injured, but none seriously.

Viewing pictures from the scene, it really is amazing that no one suffered serious injuries in this multi-vehicle wreck. Still, someone’s negligence or recklessness would seem to have played some sort of role and those who were victims as a result may find that life has been altered a lot, even with their injuries being minor. Consulting with an attorney would be something for them to consider.

Brooklyn bad for bike and pedestrian injuries, deaths

Bicycling as a main mode of transportation has come a long way in the past few years. As the cost of gassing up our motor vehicles has gone up, the appeal of bicycling in the boroughs of New York has increased.

But with that rise has come a corresponding increase in the numbers of accidents between bicyclists and pedestrians and motor vehicles. And, of course, the generally unprotected bikers and walkers are the ones that have suffered the most in terms of injuries, both fatal and non. And statistics from the city's Department of Transportation indicate that Brooklyn is the borough where people tend to fare the worst.

Long Island medical malpractice case headed back to court

A lot of our readers may be familiar with the medical malpractice case that recently came to a verdict in Suffolk County. After years of litigation and three separate trials, a jury declared last week that St. Charles Hospital should pay a 10-year-old Bayport girl and her family $130 million for medical errors during delivery that left her with cerebral palsy.

The verdict and award were hard fought for and won. The suit was first brought in 2008. In the first trial, the jury ruled in favor of the hospital. But that verdict was overturned on appeal. A second trial ended with a hung jury. The jury in the latest trial not only ruled for the plaintiff, but issued an award that is nearly record setting.

'Zombie' truck wreck liability could be tough to sort out

The question of liability in motor vehicle accident, especially when a commercial truck is involved, can take a lot of energy to sort out. Personal injury attorneys in New York know this well. It's not an endeavor that injured victims or their families are typically equipped to take on, nor should they. It's always better to contact an experienced attorney to handle such things in order to most efficiently reach an optimal outcome.

That could be really hard to do in the case of a truck accident case that surfaced earlier this month. It didn't happen in New York, but the details are so unusual that we feel they bear noting.
